Johnny Bench replaced Reds catcher Johnny Edwards, who had been the Reds‘ primary catcher from 1962-1967. But Bench was replaced by Joe Nolan as the Reds backstop in 1981, moving the great Johnny Bench to 3B. But young Alex Trevino was the heir apparent, taking over in 1982, but like Johnny told us last week, Trevino never fulfilled that promise (author’s paraphrase).
Hey Johnny, was the “Baseball Bunch ” still on the air back in 1981-83. I loved that show! Do you still stay in touch with “The Chicken”?
Here are some Bench Quotes from his website : http://www.johnnybench.com/main.php
Bench Quotes: “A catcher and his body are like the outlaw and his horse. He’s got to ride that nag till it drops.” , “A slump is like a soft bed, easy to get in to, but hard to get out of! Persevere.” and “I can throw out any man alive.”
