MLB Trade Deadline Transactions
Peter Schiller | Jul 31, 2008 | Comments 2
In transactions from Wednesday, July 30th the New York Yankees were the most active with two moves.
First, in a minor move, they traded ineffective RHP LaTroy Hawkins (RP), whom they designated him for assignment Saturday, to the Houston Astros for INF Matt Cusick, a 22-year old minor leaguer in class A ball. Analysis: The Yankees just wanted to get something for Hawkins and Cusick was batting .285 with 9 HRs and 38 RBIs in 94 games. Not a bad pick up for someone they had already DFA’d.
Second and more importantly, the Yankees have found a replacement for injured C Posada with a trade in which they sent RHP Kyle Farnsworth (RP) to the Detroit Tigers for C Ivan “Pudge” Rodriguez who is a free agent, I believe, at the end of this year. Smart move for both clubs as the Tigers needed help in the bullpen and the Yankees wanted more production out of their catcher. Molina was great defensively, but that’s just not good enough in the Bronx.
Then, in today’s news, we started off with a wimper, but as the day went on, the names got bigger!
The Seattle Mariners have acquired RHP Gaby Hernandez from the Florida Marlins in exchange for LHP Arthur Rhodes. The Chicago White Sox acquired OF Ken Griffey Jr. and cash considerations from the Cincinnati Reds in exchange for RHP Nick Masset and 2B Danny Richar. Then came the move you all have been waiting for, right at the deadline in a three way deal:
The Boston Red Sox sent disgruntled LF Manny Ramirez to the Los Angeles Dodgers, the Red Sox get LF Jason Bay from the Pittsburg Pirates while the Dodgers send the Pirates minor leaguer 3B Andy LaRoche (who has spent some time at the major league level) and pitcher Bryan Morris as well as the Red Sox who also sent minor leaguer OF Brandon Moss and RHP Craig Hansen (RP). The Red Sox were going to pay the rest of Manny’s 2008 salary if he went to the Marlins, but I have not heard yet if cash considerations were sent to LA, but given the fact that Boston also had to part with prospects (which was not in the deal that included the Marlins), I doubt it!
Let’s hear what you think about these moves! Where is Griffey going to play and who’s the odd man out in Chicago? Who sits in LA? Make your voice be heard!

Hey! I just saw your site on Top MLB Blogs and I would just like to say nice blog! I am from Seattle and I am a Mariner fan.
I do not think they should have been trading for pitchers, they need OFFENSE. They started the season off great but now they struggle to get runs on the board! And it makes me mad just watching them!
Well anyways best of luck to you, I hope you like my MLB BLog!
