Jim Rice was a fine player in his time, as I said in the other post I just don't consider him an all time great. Manny has the pretty numbers like the 500+ homeruns and he also has his 2 W.S. rings as well as being one of the post seasons all-time clutch players.. Jim Rice reminds me of Dale Murphy who has numbers similar to Rice yet is not in the HOF. I didn't get to see RIce play so its not fair of me to say he is not HOF worthy, I started really following baseball in 1989 when I was about 10 yrs. old.. When I think of HOF I think of guys like Ted Williams and Mickey Mantle or more current players like Nolan Ryan and George Brett and soon to be in the HOF Greg Maddux. When I look at Jim Rice's stats I see about 4-5 seasons that were awesome.. the rest of his career just seemed average to me.

In the late 1970's and 1980's, teams did not have 12 pitchers on the staff, more likely around 10.

This seems to be a very interesting topic. I'm not sure how exactly, this has affected voting, but it is something to consider. I'm not sure I agree with the assertion that Manny and Rice are very close to the same player, but they are similar in some aspects.

Please check out BillJordan’s last blog post..MLB.TV and the NHL Team Up in Viewing Package!
