2013 Fleer Retro Baseball is the first product slated to have bubblegum included in packs!

Carlsbad, CA (April 1, 2013) – Collectors often ask, “What ever happened to bubblegum in baseball card packs?” What most people don’t realize is that Upper Deck never made a practice of inserting bubblegum into baseball packs, mainly because the gum would damage the cards and Upper Deck was more focused on the quality of the cards being opened by collectors. Gum always seemed like a gimmick or distraction from a collectability standpoint; that is, until now.

In 2005 Upper Deck purchased the Fleer Corporation and began releasing some select products under the Fleer name. Recently, Upper Deck released a new brand of trading cards called “Fleer Retro” for basketball, football and hockey. The new brand has been a smash hit with collectors, so much so that they decided to include gum as a fun “retro” element for the 2013 Fleer Retro Baseball set releasing this summer.

“We are excited to announce we are planning to insert sticks of bubblegum in packs of the new 2013 Fleer Retro Baseball product,” said Chris Carlin, sports marketing manager for Upper Deck. “It just seemed like the perfect fit, since you just cannot get more retro than bubblegum in baseball card packs. We have been working on replicating the exact same consistency and taste that fans remember from packs released in the ‘80’s, and believe that including the gum will bring back great memories for our fans.”

Recently, Upper Deck officials took the new bubblegum prototype to the Las Vegas Industry Summit, where they tested it out and captured fan reactions on video. Take a look at the surprising reactions that were captured on camera from industry dealers, former major leaguer Frank “The Big Hurt” Thomas, former Notre Dame great Raghib “Rocket” Ismail and even Larry “The Soup Nazi” Thomas:
