Welcome to the first, and hopefully not last, Baseball Reflections Keychain Raffle sponsored by WholesaleKeychain.com.

We will be raffling off 9 MLB team keychains. There will be links below to the WholesaleKeychain.com page of the 9 teams (these links will open up in a new tab or page) selected for this raffle.

There will be at least 1 team representing all 6 divisions! I looked up the Baseball Reflections.com demographics to find the cities that have the most Baseball Reflections readership, per the AW Stats (our site stats counter).

The winners will have their choice of keychains from that team’s page and if it is an engravable keychain, WholesaleKeychain.com will engrave 3 lines up to 11 characters per line for you, too!

So, without further ado, here are the teams:

For those of you who were not reading Baseball Reflections in the early days, or are recent patrons of the site, I have gathered a listing of all of the interviews I have done for the site over the first 18 months of our existence. They are listed in the order in which they were first posted on this site.

Back on December 15, 2007, I interviewed Sooze from BabesLoveBaseball concerning the drama that surrounded the Johan Santana situation, the Twins, and Blogging in general. Here is the link from that “Interview With a Twins Fan”.

Then on February 5, 2008, I interviewed Ohad from Fish@Bat concerning the Cabrera/Willis trade with the Tigers and how Marlin fans feel about the salary dumping by Marlin executives after each of their World Series victories. Here is the link from “An Interview With A Florida Marlins Fan”.

Then on March 18, 2008, I interviewed the then owners (a husband and wife team from the bay area) of BallHype (a social sports, networking community site). Here is the link from “Interview with the Creators & Owners of BallHype & ShowHype”.

More recently, on December 8, 2008, I polled all of the baseball bloggers I had e-mails from and I receive these 6 replies and one person even linked back to this from his own site, Sox Addict, with his own answers. Here is the link from “An Interview of Baseball Bloggers on InterLeague Play”.

The most recent one is from January 21, 2009 with current World Champion relief pitcher from the Philadelphia Phillies, Chad Durbin. In this interview, I asked Chad about his first year with Philly, his success in 2008 and his new off-field endeavor, Showcase-U, a business he co-founded which went live during the 2008 season. Here is the link from “An Interview with Chad Durbin, Phillies RP”.

As more interviews are conducted, I will update this list and repost it on another Saturday evening.

As always, comments on this and ALL posts are more than welcomed!

CF Ichiro Suzuki

However, Ichiro landed himself on the 15 day DL for the first time in his career with a blood ulcer in his stomach. He was placed on it retroactively to spring training, so he was available to play this past weekend against Oakland.

Brandon Morrow told management that due to his concern for monitoring his diabetes, he feels it’s best for his body to go back to the bullpen and become the team’s closer for the foreseeable future. The Mariners’ 2009 projected win total went from the high 70s to the mid 70s over spring training, and the future looks dimmer without Morrow in the rotation and a couple of wins off per season in years beyond. Taking Morrow’s place in the rotation will be left-handed soft-tosser Ryan Rowland-Smith. Rowland-Smith has significantly less potential as a starter and would be lucky to have Jarrod Washburn’s career; upside being that he’s 90 percent of Washburn already.

Closer Brandon Morrow

To rub salt in the wound, top pitching prospect Philippe Amount will also be permanently moving to the bullpen to become a future relief ace. This is the first decision GM Jack Zduriencik has made that I am vehemently against. Amount, only age 20, had control problems as most 6-foot-7 20 year olds do, but I have to reiterate: He’s only 20 years old!! Relievers are usually made from starting pitching prospects who have failed in the rotation but still have fantastic stuff. Aumont’s stuff is certainly fantastic – he features a mid 90s sinking fastball and a hard slider with both diving and lateral movement. But without pitching in even High-A ball, he certainly has yet to fail. The silver lining here is that he’s on an accelerated path to the Majors now that he doesn’t have to learn a changeup or have as much command of his pitches. But it is by no means worth it.

Here’s the big problems I have with both Morrow and Aumont moving to the bullpen: Relievers have short shelf lives, it’s easy to build a good bullpen from the scrap heap, and barring unusual occurrences, a league average starting pitcher over 200 innings is worth as much as a star closer. The chance for Morrow to be a league average starter by defensive-independent metrics in 2009 was very high with an outside chance of being a borderline star (a solid 2-slot starter). Aumont was drafted #5 overall in 2007 with projections of Roy Halladay capabilities, but as a reliever his ceiling has been to a fraction of that.

C/DH Jeff Clement

The second Zduriencik move I have a problem with was sending catcher Jeff Clement back to Triple-A Tacoma for a fourth season. At 27 years old, it’s make or break time for Clement and he has nothing to prove after doing his best Barry Bonds impression in 2008 with a 1.131 OPS in a pitcher’s park rivaling Petco Park in San Diego – good for a staggering .475 wOBA. If Clement struggles in 2009, possibly due in part to frustration, his trade value will plummet. The organization needs to make a decision: is Clement going to receive a legitimate opportunity to catch at the Major League level, or is it time to move him to first base so he can concentrate on his hitting? Not only does this affect Clement, but the Mariners’ other top catching prospect Adam Moore has to repeat Double-A in West Tennessee after showing that it’s no challenge for him anymore. The one benefit to this decision was that it made for less complication at the C/DH slots at the Major League level, but it’s a very steep price to pay.

Upcoming article: See the Stars Align.

Now it’s time to say goodbye, after just one post, Bob Ruffolo has gotten bogged down with working on his blog’s new direction and design which will prevent him from writing here again. In parting, he has given us a sneak peek into the New Yankees Stadium with a collection of over 70 pictures. They can be found by clicking HERE.

Taking over for Bob will be Joe O’Rourke, who will have his first Mets post hit the site this coming week. Taking over for Joe writing on the Mets and filling in for Aaron on the Phillies will be Stan Whyte who also comes to us from PSU (the same as Joe) and Bloggle Heads ! You can find his work on their site by clicking HERE.

We still have the following teams that are looking for writers write about them on a monthly basis. They are the Braves, Marlins, Nationals, Twins, Royals, Reds, Pirates, Angels, A’s and Padres.

I would also like to get a one time post (more specifically, a review) from a woman’s perspective on Alyssa Milano’s Touch line of women’s MLB apparel. Someone who actually owns something from that line.

If anyone is interested in either writing for one of these remaining teams or the Touch post, please contact me at peter@baseballreflections.com

There was quite a bit of salary coming off the payroll, there were surpluses to trade from, and GM John Mozeliak promised to be “aggressive,” taking care of the “low-hanging fruit” first and moving on to other things.

That was before the worst financial crisis in years hit the country.

Nobody knew it at the time, but the largest financial outlay of the 2008 offseason actually happened before the last pitch of the 2008 season. The signing of pitcher Kyle Lohse for four years, $40 million was seen as a sensible move at the time. No one knew that it would be one of the largest non-Yankee contracts given out in the offseason.

Mozeliak’s aggressiveness was quickly tempered by an internal payroll cap that went from a projected $110 million to roughly $95 million as the recession hit and ownership became more conservative about attendance figures for 2009. While the market for pitching started to bottom out, it was still pricier than the Cardinals wanted, due to many in-house options.

St. Louis did make a run at closer Brian Fuentes, offering him more per year than the team that eventually signed him, but were reluctant to go three years when they had youngsters Chris Perez and Jason Motte ready to take the reins soon, if not in 2009.

Image via Wikipedia

The biggest move of the actual offseason was acquiring Khalil Greene from the Padres in exchange for minor league reliever Mark Worrell and a player to be named later (well, sooner now, as the Padres should make their selection by the end of March). Worrell was blocked here and never really got into favor with management, something he made explicitly clear in an interview with Scout.com that was coincidentally published the day of the trade.

So for basically nothing save his salary, the Cardinals upgraded the shortstop position dramatically. Both Cesar Izturis, the occupant last year who now will be starting in Baltimore, and Greene have a solid defensive reputation. Izturis may be slightly better, but when you factor in Greene’s power and batting possibilities, it’s no contest. While Greene struggled last year in San Diego, he did hit better away from the pitcher’s haven known as Petco. So far this spring, he has been very productive with the bat, though has yet to hit a home run.

Besides the assorted non-roster invitees and bargain basement gambles, the only other significant moves of the offseason were the signings of left-handed specialists Trever Miller and, after spring training had gotten under way, Dennys Reyes. Both allow Tony La Russa flexibility in his bullpen, something that the manager is notorious for wanting. Miller may get some use in the closer role, as that hasn’t been nailed down yet, though he won’t be the everyday guy in that slot.

What can Cardinal fans expect for 2009? Right now, it looks like a contending team. Adam Wainwright and Chris Carpenter are both healthy, giving the team a 1-2 punch that can rank with anyone. Lohse slides into the number three slot. While it would be surprising if he repeated last year’s success, his work with Dave Duncan does seem to have paid off and he should be a benefit to the club.

Todd Wellemeyer has thrived after coming to St. Louis and there is little reason to think he’d take a major step back in 2009. His recent record means that he’s a little overqualified for the fourth role. Joel Pineiro takes the last spot in the rotation. Not a lot is expected out of Pineiro, though he has thrown well in the spring. Still, it’s the fifth slot in the rotation. The Yankees are probably the only team that expects a lot from that position.

The bullpen, which was such a powder keg last season, should be greatly improved. The squad started improving down the stretch last year, when Motte and Perez were brought up. The addition of Miller and Reyes (and the subtraction of Randy Flores and Ron Villone) helps the left side out tremendously. Kyle McClellan faded down the stretch, but should be rested and ready to go. He has been stretched out to be a starter if Carpenter relapses, but the extra conditioning should be helpful in keeping him fresh all year also.

Ryan Franklin returns after a rough year in 2008, though he blames some of that on doing the closing while feeling like the job should be Jason Isringhausen’s, since he was the nominal closer. Izzy’s gone to Tampa Bay now, so perhaps Franklin’s numbers will improve. Brad Thompson may take the last slot in the pen, since he is able to move from the rotation to the bullpen with little difficulty.

While the closer role itself has not been defined—LaRussa has indicated he might mix and match early on in the season with Perez, Motte, Franklin and Miller—the bullpen on the whole seems to be much stronger than it was last year, when it blew a league-high 30 saves.

Offensively, the Cardinals should be in good shape. Of course, how bad can you be when you have the best player in baseball hitting third in your lineup? Albert Pujols is showing no ill effects from his off-season nerve transposition surgery. Albert will be Albert. The question becomes how often will he be pitched to.

The answer to that lies with Rick Ankiel and Ryan Ludwick. Both players had strong campaigns last year and there is little reason to suspect a major drop off in the upcoming season. Ankiel has only a year and a quarter of Major League experience, but it’s hard to tell looking at his final numbers. He has healed from the sports hernia that hampered him down the stretch last year and has put up strong numbers in the spring.

While most people know about Ludwick’s breakout last year, many don’t realize that he was at one time a top prospect in the Oakland system. He finally was healthy and was able to show what he could do over a full season. While challenging Pujols for the team lead in home runs might be tough to do in back-to-back years, a year of .280 and 25 home runs would seem to be the minimum of what to expect from him.

Image via Wikipedia

As for the rest of the lineup, we’ve already touched on Khalil Greene. Third base appears to be the domain of Joe Mather while Troy Glaus is rehabbing his surgically-repaired shoulder. Glaus should be back in the lineup early in May. Mather showed reasonable power in his debut last year and has acquitted himself well at third this spring. Yadier Molina had his worst defensive year in 2008 (which meant, of course, that he won his first Gold Glove) but his bat took another step up. He’ll never have double-digit home run power, but it’s looking like that low-.200s average of 2006 is a thing of the past.

Then there are the two question marks that, as of this writing, still haven’t been fully resolved.

The third outfield slot, most likely left field with Ludwick in right and Ankiel in center, is still up for grabs. If his hitting this spring is any indication, Chris Duncan is healthy and back to bashing. He’s a good source of power from the left side. However, left side power is pretty plentiful in the Cardinal outfield, with Ankiel and prospect Colby Rasmus both hitting from that side. Skip Schumaker hits from the left side as well, but not for power. More on Skip in a bit.

Rasmus has had a slow start to the spring but has shown signs lately of warming up. La Russa has noted that he has a talent that “shoves people aside,” so if he has a strong kick to finish the spring, he could force Mozeliak into some tough decisions. Brian Barton is also in the mix, but he is likely to start at AAA Memphis due to his lack of experience. However, his right handed bat and his speed would make for a good platoon possibility with Duncan.

What complicates the outfield even more is Schumaker. He has spent the spring attempting to convert to second base. While his offense can play there, his defense has been sporadic, a dangerous thing for a team that focuses on getting ground balls. As of March 11, reports out of St. Louis were that the Cardinals were considering pulling the plug on this experiment.

If Schumaker doesn’t take second, the best of Brendan Ryan, Joe Thurston , Brian Barden and Tyler Greene probably gets a look. If Schumaker moves back to the outfield instead of hitting the minors to work on his technique, that likely forces Barton and Rasmus to AAA, unless a trade is made.

While there are still some question marks, this year’s Cardinal squad looks to be able to contend in one of the weaker divisions in baseball. The two combined for 24 wins in 2008 and the run CC went on after his trade from Cleveland has been well documented. With the “workhorse” Sabathia now in New York, and the oft-injured Sheets out of the picture, the Brewers face varying questions throughout their rotation.

THE 2009 STAFF

Yovani Gallardo, the most likely candidate to lead the staff, has ace-like promise, but the sample size is small because of a near season ending injury he suffered last season. The 23-year old Gallardo has made 21 career starts and is 9-4 with a 3.38 ERA, 1.29 WHIP and 8.14 K/9. The injury should have little to no affect on him other than limiting his experience. Look for Gallardo to win 15+ games in front of a stronger offense in Milwaukee.

Manny Parra who has all of 31 starts under his belt started 2008 strong, going 9-2 through mid-July, but he struggled in the second half, posting an ERA of 5.31 and eventually finished the season just 10-8. Parra will need to play in 2009 like he did in the first half of 2008 or the Brewers will find themselves struggling to keep pace in the NL Central.

Dave Bush will enter his fourth season with the Brewers and the previous three were consistently inconsistent. In 2008 Bush was in the top five in the NL in WHIP but he again struggled to keep his ERA down. I documented in one of my posts on my own blog (Bush getting settled in new look rotation) some of the reasons for this. A lot of it has to do with his inability to keep the ball in the park and his struggles keeping the runners that do get on base from crossing home plate. You can expect another .500 year with an ERA just over four for Bush.

Jeff Suppan has been the recipient of some Brewer fan angst over the past year, and his struggles in Spring Training this season have done little to calm their nerves. At 34 he becomes the veteran of the staff, that and his ability to chew up innings may be the best qualities he offers this team. In 2008 Suppan posted an ERA of nearly 5.00, and surrendered 30 home runs, finishing the season 10-10. Slotted in the fourth or fifth spot of the rotation is where he is best suited, and around .500 is where he will end up at season’s end.

Rounding out the rotation will be Braden Looper, assuming he is healthy enough to go. Looper is Suppan-esque in many ways including his ability to eat up innings. At 34, he will be entering his third year as a starter having made just 63 starts since 2007. Looper is a 24-26 as a starter and Brewer fans should expect much the same from Braden as they expect from Suppan. I pulled some numbers to illustrate the similarities between the two pitchers. The first line is Looper from 2007 and the second Suppan from last year:

Eerie.

THE BULLPEN

The Brewers needed a closer with the retirement of Solomon Torres, enter Trevor Hoffman. Hoffman still shows signs of being effective despite his age and should be steady for the Brewers. Carlos Villanueva, Jorge Julio, Seth McClung, Todd Coffey and Mitch Stetter form a crew that has as many question marks as the starters. With relievers for any team, each season offers something different and what this bunch can do will be seen when April hits.

THE LINEUP

I have read a couple of Brewer previews prior to writing this one, and one common theme focuses on the Brewers ability to score runs. Yet they return much of the same players to the lineup, one that scored the seventh most runs in the National League in 2008, 105 runs fewer than the Chicago Cubs. A main reason for the lack of run production can be found in a team batting average of .253 in ’08.

Ryan Braun who was moved from 3B to LF in ’08 and hit .285 with 37 HRs and 106 RBI, leading the team in all three categories. Expect more of the same from one of the league’s premier young sluggers.

Prince Fielder’s production tailed off in just about every category on 2008. Coming off his 50-homer season in 2007, Fielder’s numbers took a hit and the people were quick to attribute it to everything from his new all veggie diet to weight gain. In May Prince will turn 25 and many believe he is due for a rebound. That birthday could be just what he needs. In 2007 from May 30 forward, he batted .277 with 28 home runs, 77 RBIs and a .925 OPS.

Only Florida and Philadelphia hit more home runs than Milwaukee in 2008, and the 71 they got from Prince and Braun were only the beginning. Three other players including Mike Cameron, J.J. Hardy and Corey Hart all chipped in with 20+, and they may need similar power numbers from those three in ’09, especially if they are unable to improve on their individual batting averages. While Hardy hit a respectable .285, Hart struggled at .268 and Cameron did as well at .243 while striking out a team high 142 times.

Bill Hall did much of the same hitting only .225 and he has not been able to find the stroke that allowed him to hit 35 home runs in 2006. Hall was Jekyll and Hyde against righties and lefties. Against south paws he hit .306 with a .893 OPS, against righties he hit an atrocious .107.

The Brewers will go with Rickie Weeks at leadoff, and I have to believe it’s because they can’t find another spot for him. In his five-year career Weeks is a .245 hitter and in 2008 he hit a career low .234. He does have a knack for the plate though. Despite his inability to get on base consistently when he does get on he scores. Weeks scored 89 runs in ’08 which was 18th in the NL. On the bright side…he is only 26.

PROSPECT WATCH

If you think the platoon of Bill Hall and Mike Lamb will last the season, I say think again. The Brewers have prospect Matt Gamel waiting in the wings to take over at 3B, and he will most likely only begin the season at Triple-A. Gamel is often compared to Ryan Braun and by mid-season he could be called up to show his skills at the major league level.

If Weeks continues to struggle you might see Hardy move to 2B to make room for Alcides Escobar. Escobar has a major league glove, but the bat is the issue right now. He doesn’t walk often enough and that keeps his speed at bay too much to make him an option for the big league club any time soon.

OUTLOOK

Most experts have this team winning around 80-85 games in 2009, and I think that is pretty accurate. The Brewers should be able to score runs, but I see them coming in bunches and not as consistently as people would like to think. Add that to a pitching staff that will be equally inconsistent and you have the recipe for a .500 team. Braun, Fielder and Hardy will do their part to keep this team rolling, but in the end they finish no better than second in the NL Central.

The Texas Rangers finished the 2008 season with a 79-83 record, finishing second in the AL West behind the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. During the season, the Rangers finished first in all offensive categories, while finishing last in all but one category in pitching. It is no secret the Rangers need to focus on pitching. That has been a mantra for many years in Arlington. This season is no different, however, the Rangers have different pieces ready for movement. Texas has the first ranked minor league system, which compiles pitching, offense and defense. The pitching outlook for the future looks bright with the emergence of Thomas Diamond, Tommy Hunter and Guillermo Moscoso. More pitching prospects keep coming up within the Rangers organization. Texas played it conservatively in the offseason to focus on the development of the pitching within their organization. That’s not to say they didn’t do anything in their time off. The Rangers signed Derrick Turnbow, Brenden Donnelly and Kris Benson (who spent last season out of the league) to bring in veteran leadership in the bullpen. With Texas struggling to get out of obscurity, they dipped into the Milwaukee Brewers coaching staff and took Mike Maddux to help improve the current state of pitching. Though the Rangers couldn’t land Ben Sheets, they will make an attempt after the 2009 season when Sheets fully recovers from his surgery.

On the offensive and defensive side of the ball, the Rangers did very little in the offseason. Signing Andruw Jones was a win-win situation. The ten-time gold glove winner will compete for a starting position in an already crowded outfield rotation that includes Josh Hamilton, Brandon Boggs and offensive terror Nelson Cruz. If Jones makes the 40-man roster, he will see split time with Hamilton and possibly see some time as DH. Rudy Jaramillo has helped work on the Jones’ swing and approach to the plate and appears to be in the position to make a run for a roster spot. If he doesn’t make the roster, the Rangers won’t pay him a roster bonus and can leverage him for a trade.

Despite the signings of Jones and journeyman Omar Vizquel, Texas played it conservatively. Still reeling from the Alex Rodriguez signing of yesteryear, the Rangers are limited with what they can do monetarily, however, developing the players in the minor league system is also important.

The rest of the AL West was quite busy as well with Anaheim and Oakland landing key offensive players to make a run at the AL Championship, but the true test of the Rangers will be to determine whether or not the group of core veterans, Michael Young moving to third and a healthy mix of highly touted rookies can push for a playoff spot, division winner or not. 2009 will be an important year for Ron Washington. If the defense and pitching don’t turn around he could be out of the job before the All-Star break.

This season expect the Rangers to find some gems in their pitching staff. Their offense will remain the same: dominant. The Rangers are still a season or two away from contending. Pitching will remain an issue for the Rangers because of their lack of experienced pitchers in the rotation. Despite Kevin Millwood and Vincente Padilla, the other projected starters are either in their second season of play or have bounced from bullpen to starting rotation.

Projection for 2009: 87-75, second place AL West. No playoff spot.

You may have noticed that Bill and I have come clean and announced our allegiances for our hometown teams the Cleveland Indians (Bill) and the Boston Red Sox (Peter) and now we are adding three more teams to that list along with three more writers.

We have added Aaron Schimpf from RBI Magazine, Bob Ruffolo from Yankees Rumors and Theo Fightmaster from the SF Giants Examiner. I will write more on them in a minute, please bear with me. These men will write a monthly “Reflection” on their team for us and Bill and I will try to limit the Indians and Red Sox Reflections to once a month as well unless something really BIG happens. We will also be looking to sign up writers for the remaining Major League teams as well, so if you’re interested e-mail me (Peter) at peter@baseballreflections.com to apply.

Theo Fightmaster from the SF Giants Examiner

Theo will be writing on the San Francisco Giants. Here’s a sneak peek of Theo’s work over at SF Giants Examiner, this article is called, Is the window closing on this Giants team?. He will be making his first post with us either this month or early next month.

What this means for the site is that you will get a more well rounded look at the league and we will have more time to research before publishing articles and provide you with much more detailed analysis as we get closer to having writers for every MLB team. This could also allow me to devote more time to promote the site, tweak the look and feel of the site, etc. Plus, it should bring in some more readers, too.

After all, this site is called Baseball Reflections and these new writers and the others who will hopefully join later will give us the ability to reflect on each team where we just don’t have the resources or manpower to currently do. I hope you ll enjoy the direction we’re moving towards.
