Second Half Fantasy Options: Right Field

When looking to fill out your outfield positions in fantasy baseball, your league may require you to use one each of a left fielder, center fielder and right fielder. If your league has these specific position requirements, there is no need to worry. I recently discussed options for left field fantasy baseball players as well as fantasy baseball center field options for the second half of 2011. Now let’s take a look at some of the options you may want to consider for filling out the position of right fielder on your fantasy baseball squad.

To begin with, there are several right fielders who have started the 2011 season very slowly from a statistical point of view.  Several of these players had lofty expectations placed upon them entering the season and may be in a position to turn things around. If you own any of these players, you may want to hang on a little bit longer in the hopes they have an improved second half. If you do not own these players, you may want to target them in a trade as “buy low” candidates:

Jason Heyward (ATL) –

There may not be a more talented all-around player in the game than Heyward. His problem has been nagging injuries and it has kept him from being a Tier 1 player for 2 seasons now. On July 1^st, he finally hit his first home run since April 29^th and is showing signs of heating up. With his skills, he could have a monster second half.

Other “buy low” right fielders based upon poor first halves include: Ichiro Suzuki (SEA), Jayson Werth (WAS), Rajai Davis (TOR)  (based on 2010 RF eligibility), Nick Swisher (NYY) and Vladimir Guerrero (BAL).

If you would prefer to target an unsung hero, or a player who has put up good statistics so far in 2011 while remaining “under the radar” there are no lack of candidates at the right field position:

Brennan Boesch (DET) –

Not a lot was expected of Boesch in 2011 but he has delivered solid stats for his fantasy owners. He hit .393 in June and has scored runs in bunches as well. With an impressive 12 HR so far in 2011, there is no reason to believe his stats will regress in the second half of the season.

Other surprising players at RF include: Matt Joyce (TB), Carlos Beltran (NYM), Jeff Francoeur (KC), Seth Smith (COL) and Ryan Ludwick (SD).

If power is what you are looking for from your fantasy baseball right fielder, it is definitely a position which can help deliver home runs to your line up:

Jose Bautista (TOR) –

The notions of 2010 being a fluke are long since forgotten. Bautista is the ‘real deal’ and provides power like no other right fielder in the game. The fact that he will start seeing some time at third base only increases his value for fantasy baseball owners. Do what you have to do to get him.

Other sources of legitimate power from the RF position include: Mike Stanton (FLA),Nelson Cruz (TEX), Lance Berkman (STL), Jay Bruce (CIN), Corey Hart (MIL) and Carlos Quentin (CWS).

There are many options to help you out at the right field position entering the second half of the 2011 season. Take a minute to look at your options and don’t be afraid to make a move. With the talent in right field, you shouldn’t be disappointed with the results.
