Boston Red Sox Through April 17, 2021

Visits: 22

After getting swept by the Baltimore Orioles to start the 2021 MLB season, the Red Sox have gone 10-1 including a 9-game winning streak (in tribute to late Red Sox Hall of Famer Ted Williams who wore # 9).

After those first three games, Red Sox fans were already out for blood, saying how new GM Chaim Bloom had failed, especially after letting go or trading fan favorites Jackie Bradley Jr – arguably one of the best defensive centerfielders to ever play for the Red Sox and an all-around nice guy and Andrew Benintendi. The claim against Chaim at the time was also that he didn’t do enough in the off season to improve the team.

Some may say that this hot start is unsustainable given the current rotation comprised of Nathan Eovaldi 2.08 ERA), Nick Pivetta (3.68 ERA), Garrett Richards (6.00 ERA), Eduardo Rodriguez (3.60 ERA) and Martin Perez (4.50 ERA). Through the first 13 games (not including yesterday’s game), they had a team ERA of 3.56.

The next stat comes from Red Sox Notes (@SoxNotes) on Twitter: the most recent Red Sox teams with a 3.75 ERA or lower through 13 games:

2004 – 3.69 (won World Series)

2007 – 2.55 (won World Series)

2013 – 2.64 (won World Series)

2018 – 3.15 (won World Series)

2021 3.56 (best record in AL)

And don’t forget, barring any setbacks, Ace pitcher Chris Sale, who is recovering from Tommy John surgery, is scheduled to pitch at some point in the 2021 season which would be like completing a Blockbuster trade without giving up any quality players in return.

In short, this team may not be as bad as was originally thought and if they can stay in contention by the time Sale returns and if he returns at his usual self, this 2021 Red Sox team might have a decent shot at the playoffs. Thus far, both their pitching and offense seem to be performing at or above expectations as a whole. Steve Hewitt of the Boston Herald, for example, has no worries about the sustainability of the offense per his pre-season review, “The offense will be among the best in baseball”

Some Red Sox starts that have started the season Red Hot are:

DH – JD Martinez with 5 HR, 17 RBI, 7 2B, with a .367 BA and .436 OBP

3B – Rafael Devers also with 5 HR and 14 RBI

SS – Xander Bogaerts with 5 2B with a .412 BA and .464 OBP

2B – Christian Arroyo with 6 2B and a .314 BA

c- Christian Vazquez with 3 2B, 2 HR, 2 SB (as a catcher) hitting .295 with a .340 OBP

Current Closer Matt Barnes is 1-0 with a 1.13 ERA through 8.0 IP with 15 K’s

Personally, I’ll hold out giving my opinion as I am of the belief that this is just too small of a sample size to judge a season on and some hitters don’t get hot until the weather does, so a lot can change until that happens.
