Sports Science Lab and Zoned Sports Academy Partner to Bring Science-Driven Combine Testing and Performance Training to NJ Athletes

Athletes in the region will now have access to the same cutting-edge innovation, science and data analytics previously available to only pro athletes

Bridgewater, NJ (February 13th, 2019) – The Sports Science Lab, a world-class sports facility and innovator using data analytics and the most advanced technologies available to improve athletic performance and mitigate potential for injury and Zoned Sports Academy, a facility specializing in optimizing all aspects of baseball and softball development, have announced a partnership that will bring the science- and data-driven methodology of the Sports Science Lab to Zoned Sports Academy’s 28,000-square foot facility.

The partnership between Zoned Sports Academy and Sports Science Lab (Zoned X SSL) is the first of its kind in the nation and brings the same cutting-edge innovation, science and data analytics previously available only to the most elite professionals to athletes of all ages and levels in the New Jersey region.

Compared to the standard athletic screening that tests only for physical readiness, every athlete that trains at Zoned x SSL undergoes the SSL’s patent-pending global athletic assessment: think of it as a science-driven athletic combine + predictive analysis used to pinpoint specific areas of your body most likely to get injured. SSL’s team of sports scientists collect and analyze thousands of data points on a single athlete and measure every aspect of performance from a single or sport-specific movement pattern to rotation, extension, flexion and other anatomical functions of every joint in the body.

After the assessment, the data pinpoints how the athlete moves – every inch and angle is measured and analyzed. The lab’s machine learning system analyzes the massive amount of data collected and generates a customized output of the optimal corrective and performance training to mitigate injury risk and to optimize performance on the field. The result? A faster, stronger and better athlete all around.

Maximizing the facility’s massive 28,000 square foot training space, football athletes preparing for a scouting combine can leverage the NFL Combine Prep program that will be analyzing the movements and drills performed during the combine. Integrating science and data into a combine prep program provides a distinct advantage for athletes: every millisecond, every angle of an athlete’s 40-yard dash and 20-yard shuttle, every inch in an athlete’s broad jump is measured. The athlete’s average reaction time, down to the very millisecond, will be measured and analyzed. Along with the in-depth assessment, athletes will combine their training with optimal regeneration and brain training and have access to data analytics to continually track their progress.

Looking at most training programs available for athletes and individuals, they all follow the same cookie cutter approach with insights limited to basic biometrics, leaving athletes frustrated when they get minimal results or are sidelined by an injury. The athletes that train at the lab – and now at Zoned – come to better understand how their bodies move, and that transcends sports.

“Expanding into the New Jersey region has always been on our trajectory primarily due to the enormous population of athletes that reside here”, said Susan Piazza, Executive Director of NY Sports Science Lab. “This partnership will allow us to make a bigger impact regionally and for athletes all over the world who come to the lab to gain insights and actionable intelligence from our proprietary assessments”.

The brain training program, led by Biomechanist and Neurocognitive Training Specialist, Matt Diorio, a former major league prospect who was drafted by the Pittsburgh Pirates, helps athletes improve their reaction time, hand/eye coordination, focus, concentration, and more aspects of sports performance that are often neglected in training using sensory strobe goggles training and other neurocognitive optimization technologies. Even a small increase in motion perception and focused attention can have profound effects on slowing the game down, which in turn will lead to better success on the field.

In a study of 252 baseball professionals published in the journal of Scientific Reports, Duke University researchers found players with higher scores during stroboscopic tests had better on-base percentage, more walks and fewer strikeouts—compared to their peers.

“I am extremely excited to introduce this partnership with the Sports Science Lab to both parents and athletes. The Lab’s innovative approach to training athletes and baseball players specifically is very unique,” said Duke Baxter, CEO of Zoned Sports Academy. “At Zoned, we continue to push the envelope and by bringing the lab in to train our players, we will only produce stronger athletes and more Division 1 and 2 athletes.”

This partnership is particularly timely and a game-changer in sports becauseit creates an incredible opportunity to make an even bigger impact in the region by educating and addressing imbalances and deficits in athletes who are still developing, both physically and mentally. Since 2000, there has been a fivefold increase in the number of serious shoulder and elbow injuries among baseball and softball players. By analyzing the thousands of baseball and softball athletes at Zoned, there is now the ability to pick up on imbalances and the likelihood of injury – even pinpointing which area of the body before that injury even occurs.
