MLB Predictions By the Numbers

The Miller-McCune article by Tom Jacobs that I am referencing today is a mathematical copyrighted model created to predict divisional outcomes in Major League Baseball. The article is entitled, “Baseball’s Best Teams Are…2009 Edition” which you can read in it’s entirety by following the previously provided link.

This model was created by associate professor of mathematical sciences and associate dean of the College of Science and Liberal Arts at the New Jersey Institute of Technology’s Bruce Bukiet, who happens to also be a Mets fan.

The only surprises in my opinion are the Yankees beating out the Ray and the Red Sox for the Al East title and a three way tie for the NL East.

Bukiet does admit that his projections are created with the opening day rosters in mind; therefore, injuries and trades are bound to affect and possibly ruin his predictions. He claims to have been calculating these predictions since 1998 with the only bumb in the road being the 2008 season. At the time of this writing, I am awaiting the proof of Bukiet’s claim to the effectiveness of his model from 1998 to 2007. If I get the proof of those predictions, I will include them as an update at the bottom of this post.
