Where the vast majority of baseball video games may step up to the plate, they also end up striking out. These top 10 are the exception and have stood the test of time:
- Wii Sports
While Wii Sports is certainly not a traditional baseball video game, it did include an excellent baseball mechanic. In addition, thanks to the fact that it was included in the Wii package, almost anyone was able to play, and almost everyone did.
- Backyard Baseball 2003
The simple presentation and uncomplicated gameplay make Backyard Baseball 2003 resemble a children’s game, it was nonetheless enjoyed by everyone who played it, including adults. Although it sees periodic releases still, these do not compare to it in its heyday.
- Mario Superstar Baseball
Mario Superstar Baseball played particularly well, and never made players feel like Nintendo simply inserted Mario’s famous name into an ill-wrought money pit. It is obvious that time and effort was put into its creation.
- The Bigs
The Bigs lived up to its name, and presented an exaggerated, arcade-style baseball video game, aiming to big league all of its competition on the market.
- MLB Slugfest: Loaded
If The Bigs could be likened to dialling it back and maintaining a baseball feel, MLB Slugfest: Loaded did the exact opposite, and pushed it through the roof.
-
Ken Griffey Jr.’s Slugfest
Even today fans of baseball and video games return to Ken Griffey Jr.’s Slugfest to get their nine innings in. While the graphics, rosters and overall feel may be somewhat dated, how fun and memorable the experience of playing it was ensures it is still being enjoyed. With an adrenaline pumping thrill ride that can possibly only be compared to online betting in NZ and the rest of the world, Slugfest is a great game.
- Triple Play 2000 (PlayStation Version)
Although the Triple Play series was not fated to last much longer than the year 2000, as it was eventually taken in a new direction by EA, becoming MVP Baseball in 2003, the Triple Play 2000 version will always be fondly remembered by baseball fans as not only the best part of this series, but a high spot for baseball games in general as well.
- World Series Baseball
Even though it did not feature 3D graphics, Sega’s World Series Baseball was admired for the realistic depiction of baseball it presented, and it can be said to have paved the way for all the video games that followed it. Although not the most prominent game of all time, it was nonetheless a force to be reckoned with.
- MLB 06: The Show
The MLB 06: The Show season and franchise modes were both excellent, with the latter allowing players to take control of almost everything regarding their team, including the vendor and the prices for tickets.
- MVP Baseball 2005
MVP Baseball 2005 is still largely considered to be the very best baseball video game of all time, with some Amazon listings still selling it for US$30 or more over 10 years later. Thanks to the game being so widely hyped as the best there is, modding communities are ensuring that is stays available with updated uniforms, rosters, stadiums, and walk up music on the PC. The cult following that has formed around this game is a deserved one, and it ensures that baseball fans are still being kept entertained.
Whether it is in a real-life stadium or by means of the world’s best video games, baseball fans have got their pick of the litter in today’s world.
