At some point this summer, if the Mets ever get everyone on the field, they would actually field a pretty formidable team.

A lineup of Jose Reyes, Angel Pagan, David Wright, Carlos Beltran, Ike Davis, Jason Bay, Josh Thole and Justin Turner, with Daniel Murphy in reserve, would excite many Mets fans.

Ahhh, that’s quite a dream, but it’s more like a pipedream. Wright and Davis are not close to coming back.

The future of the starting rotation looks brighter. Johan Santana could return soon to join Mike Pelfrey, R.A. Dickey, Dillon Gee and Jonathon Niese.

It has been inspiring to see the Mets overachieve while waiting for all the core players to return. Turner, Murphy and Ruben Tejada have all contributed in their expanded roles and the young pitchers (Gee and Niese, in particular) are developing nicely.

I admire the way the Mets are playing, but their starting pitching is taking a lot of pressure off of their offense. It’s going to be hard for the Mets to stay close to .500 with this lineup (even Murphy batted cleanup recently).

If the Mets continue to play well, there is a better chance for their star players to all play together again. If the Mets are respectable come August, GM Sandy Alderson will be hard-pressed to trade Jose Reyes and Carlos Beltran. They should not trade Reyes, period, but there will be a lot of pressure to ship out their high-earning stars if the Mets plant themselves firmly in the second division.

Hopefully that will not happen. If the Mets can stay around .500 when they get completely healthy, they could be a force down the stretch. It may be a pipedream, but it’s a dream nonetheless.
