Chicago Cubs Shopping for trade deals for Happ, Contreras

Visits: 4

Professional sports are a business and in business deals have to be made to better the organization.  In the case of the Chicago Cubs, outfielder Ian Happ and fan-favorite catcher Willson Contreras are purportedly on the MLB trade market and with an August 2nd deadline rapidly approaching, both players may have seen their last days in the home clubhouse in the Friendly Confines.

Ian Happ and Willson Contreras are likely on the trading block and heading to new teams come next week.

The Cubs front office is actively shopping for buyers for both Happ and Contreras and it looks like both players may be heading to East divisions by this time next week with Ian Happ joining the Yankees and Contreras joining the NL East with the Mets. Both players have reportedly started packing their bags (literally) and are ready to join their new ballclubs if these trades become a reality. Happ is currently batting .282 with nine homers and 44 RBI so far this season; last year Happ hit 25 dingers and that additional firepower may be exactly what the Yankees are looking for as they make a deep push into the postseason with an early eye on the World Series.

Willson Contreras will become a free agent after the 2022 season and is hitting .258 with 14 homers and 37 RBI so far in the 2022 campaign.  As an All-Star catcher, Contreras can pull double duty in the DH spot and keep his bat in the daily lineup even when not behind the plate.  If Contreras is in fact traded by next week, all that remains of the 2016 World Series team will be gone.  While these trades are still considered “possibilities,” Cubs fans have already resigned themselves to seeing both players in new uniforms soon.  This past weekend at Wrigley Field,  Cubbies fans gave Contreras a standing ovation when he came to the plate as a nod very similar to what happened to Freddie Freeman when he returned to Atlanta recently wearing an unfamiliar Dodgers uniform.  At any rate, the only thing that stays constant is change and the Cubs are about to say farewell to a reliable fan favorite in Willson Contreras.
