Mets vs. Brewers pitching preview

The Brewers are slowly climbing out of the basement, and their playoff hopes are still alive. A three games series with the Mets will be basically a win or go home scenario, and the Mets will not role over, despite being basically out of playoff contention. Milwaukee sits just 3 games back of the wildcard spot, after being 12 ½ games back of that same wildcard spot just about a month ago.

MLB odds are favoring the Brewers in this one, who are currently one win away from setting a franchise home wins record. Milwaukee has won 17 straight games in Miller Park.

The first game of this series will feature Jonathon Niese heading to the hill, while Mike Fiers will pitch for the Brewers. Fiers has been solid this season, going 9-7, with a 3.05 ERA and 111 strikeouts. Niese started hot, but he has leveled off after the first half. His season stats include a 10-9 record, a 3.47 ERA and 140 strikeouts.

Shaun Marcum will take the ball in game number two of this three game series. Marcum has been solid this season, going 5-4 with a 3.71 ERA. The Mets will start Jenrry Mejia, who only has three starts under his belt this season.

The rubber game will feature Chris Young versus Wily Peralta. Neither of these two guys have had solid seasons.

The Brewers have a great shot at continuing their home streak. They have the edge in pitching, and they also have the motivation of being only 3 games out of a wildcard slot. If the Brewers can make the playoffs after losing Prince Fielder in the offseason, and trading Zach Greinke, it would mark one of the best comebacks in MLB history. It’s not impossible, the Cardinals came back from a 10 game hole in September, and we all know how that ended.
