Here is an overview of the managerial transactions that have recently taken place…

During the Season…

Former Tiger and Dodger OF Kirk Gibson took over for the Diamondbacks when A.J. Hinch was fired and has recently been signed to a two year contract to manage the team going forward.

In LA, Joe Torre made it be known that this year would be his last in LA and the Dodgers announced that former Yankee 1B Don Mattingly would take over in 2011.

Ken Macha took over for Ned Yost in Milwaukee and finished the remainder of the season at the helm of the Brewers. More on Macha a little later…

Seattle released Don Wakamatsu and replaced him with interim manager Daren Brown. One would think that Brown will not be the manager come opening day 2011.

The Marlins fired Fredi Gonzalez and replaced him with interim Edwin Rodriguez.

In Baltimore, Dave Tremblay was let go and was replaced for a short time by Juan Manuel, but the O’s then hired full time manager Buck Showalter and led them to a winning record the rest of the way as he seems to have lit a fire under the youngsters!

Also, Cubs manager Lou Piniella retired before the end of the season giving way to interim Mike Quade, who will not hold onto the job in 2011.

And finally, Blue Jays manager Cito Gaston made it be known that he will not be returning to manage in 2011 as he is once again retiring. Gaston let it be known that he thinks that former Rockies manager Don Baylor would be a good choice to manager in Toronto.

Since the End of the Regular Season…

Since the end of the regular season on Sunday there have been a few managerial firings around the league and one possible GM “reasignment”.

The Brewers apparently weren’t happy with the job done by interim manager Ken Macha as they made it know that he would NOT be back in 2011.

Pittsburgh has also fired manager John Russell after 3 straight seasons without winning even 70 games and this year they didn’t even reach 60 games (57)!

The Mets were the team that made multiple moves these past few days when they fired Jerry Manuel & Omar Minaya was let go of his duties as GM.

In St. Louis, Tony LaRussa told the team that he will make a decision upon if he will be back to manage the Cardinals in 2011 within the next 7 to 10 days as he ponders this during his annual move back home for the off season.

The Candidates to Manage These MLB Teams…

In Chicago, it is hoped that Hall of Fame 2B Ryne Sandberg will be given the reigns, but that is not a done deal.

Joe Torre has not ruled out managing elsewhere and may even find his way back to NY managing the Mets some have said.

There’s also the possibility of Bobby Valentine coming back to manage in the US after doing so in Japan from 2004 until 2009 for the Chiba Lotte Marines.

Then there is Yankees coach and former manager of the year, Tony Pena, Red Sox pitching coach John Farrell & their bench coach Demarlo Hale. Both of whom have been thought of in the past for managerial jobs. In fact, Farrell was asked to manage the Pirates before they hired Russell. Former manager Mike “the human rain delay” Hargrove is another cadidate along with former Tigers SS and interim manager from 2003 to 2005, Alan Trammell.
