It is incredible how one off-season move by a big league club can change the emotions of their loyal followers.

This weekend Zach Greinke answered the Help Wanted Ad that appeared on last week’s post and transformed the Brewers starting staff from incompetence to corporeal. A season opening rotation of Gallardo, Wolf, Marcum and now Greinke sure looks better than last year’s depressing unit of Gallardo, Wolf, Davis and Bush.

It matches up well with the Cardinals and Reds and appears stronger than the Astros, Cubs and Pirates.

Giving up Alcides Escobar with all of the hype that surrounded his big league arrival was surprising to many but not to this writer who thought it was overblown and was livid when the club parted with JJ Hardy.

Lorenzo Cain had his name etched in as the starting center fielder this year and Jeremy Jeffress started demonstrating his top-prospect talent in September but the club feels that they can be adequately be replaced.

Carlos Gomez will be given one last chance to prove he is a major–league caliber player. If not, there will be a parade of replacements starting with Chris Dickerson and Brandon Boggs and likely including 27 year old prospect Brendan Katin.

A more favorable alternative would be to move Corey Hart to cf and put Mat Gamel’s powerful bat in the lineup in rf.

The club picked up Yuniesky Betancourt to replace Escobar at ss. Last year, Betancourt, in his 7th season, both hit and fielded better than Escobar.

The fifth starter spot is still open but there will be plenty of competition between Chris Narveson, Chris Capuano and Mark Rogers.

Thanks in part to the productive Brewers’ farm system, Doug Melvin has accomplished what many fans had been howling for including this one – a competitive rotation.

Not only has he redeemed himself, he has redeemed this fan who will once again fork over his hard earned cash for my customary loge level season ticket.

Let the season begin!

WELCOME TO MILWAUKEE, ZACH!
