Naming Rights, A Necessary Evil or Just Evil?

The next ballpark to fall into the naming rights trap is The Jake in Cleveland. It has been The Jake since the doors opened in 1994, but starting with the 2008 season, it will be renamed Progressive Field, named after the auto insurance company. Personally, I loathe the whole naming rights process. I can deal with the use of advertisements plastered throughout Major League ballparks, but in my opinion, naming rights for ballparks are taking things a bit too far. Although, I have to admit that some of the small market teams need every once of revenue they can muster, but it will be a sad day in baseball when ballparks such as Yankee Stadium, Wrigley Field, Fenway Park and Dodger Stadium fall into the naming rights game.
