2014 World Series

This year’s baseball World Series is nearing its climax, and there are now just four teams with a chance of landing this prestigious title. The 110th edition of Major League Baseball’s premier event will see two of the four remaining sides go head to head in a best of seven playoff, featuring the winner of the National League up against the winner of the American League. Beginning on October 21st at the home of the American League champion, the 2014 World Series could potentially run until the 29th of that month depending upon the results of early games. The Boston Red Sox’s are the reigning champions following their four game to two triumph over the St. Louis Cardinals last year. Although the Red Sox are out of the equation this time around, St Louis still have a chance to go one place better than last year, and capture the World Series for a twelfth time. The Cardinals are certainly one of the more consistent sides in Major League Baseball and in addition to their World Series appearance in 2013, they also won the championship as recently as 2011. Bookmaker Betfair make last season’s runners up 5/2 chances to become World Series champions for the second time in four years.

Current favourites for the 2014 World Series crown are the Baltimore Orioles who can be backed at odds of 2/1 over at betfair.com. Formerly known as both the Milwaukee Brewers and the St. Louis Browns, the Baltimore Orioles have three previous World Series title to their credit, but the last one of those came way back in 1983. This year has seen the Orioles win their division for the first time since 1997. The title came following a victory over the Toronto Blue Jays, and they manage to end the season on a massive 211 homeruns. This was actually the third campaign in succession that Buck Showalter’s men have completed a return over 200 or more homeruns and it is no surprise to see the Baltimore Orioles within touching distance of the World Series as a result. In their current mood, the price of 2/1 with Betfair on the Orioles doesn’t seem too shabby at all.

Away from the front two in the Betfair World Series market, the San Francisco Giants sit just behind their rivals at the 3/1 mark. The seven time World Series champions have claimed two of those title in the last four seasons and are a serious threat to the chances of both the Cardinals and the Orioles. This team were actually known as the New York Giants from 1886 to 1957, before moving and changing their name to reflect their city of residence in 1958. The move did little for the Giants in terms of success however, with their last World Series win after the 1954 victory not coming until 2010! That being said, recent years have been a lot more fruitful for San Francisco fans and Los Gigantes are now looking for what would be their third World Series in the last four years.

Finally, it is the Kansas City Royals who complete the quartet of potential World Series champions, and they are just a slightly bigger price than their three rivals, with odds of 10/3 available at the online sports book Betfair. The Royals would certainly be the least experienced of the four sides left in the fight for the 2014 World Series, but their form this season has since the Boys in Blue achieve their best return of victories since their 1989 campaign. It would be foolish to dismiss the chances of Ned Yost’s men and they could well be a value bet at their current price.
