The connection between Baseball and Gambling Scandals

Recently, many Major League Baseball players have been involved in defamatory gambling stories. Some players played baseball, while others played other sports. 

The most famous case involving gambling and baseball players occurred in the early 1920s when 8 members of the Chicago White Sox team were accused of fixing the World Series match. 

While betting on baseball games is strictly prohibited by MLB rules, there is no corresponding rule prohibiting players from betting on other sports. Many professional athletes play multiple sports, such as football, basketball, and golf. 

Most players who play sports do so for rejuvenation and recreation and do not bet on a large sum of money. However, there is a risk that sports players may

end up in gambling debt or be tempted to fix games to win bets. 

As a result, MLB commissioner Rob Manfred said he was “concerned” about players’ sportsmanship and pushed players to be conservative. Major League Baseball players can now make deals with sports betting brands like BetMGM, DraftKings and BetFred. 

Initially, only professional sports  professionals and leagues had the right to enter commercial relations with betting. One of the first active Major League Baseball players to join sports betting is EdmontonOilers.com’s, Connor McDavid. In the 2022 season, New York will become the first state to legalize online sports 

betting. 

Several indigenous television networks are now under Bally’s Umbrella. In the 1980s, Willie Mays and Mickey Mantle were given punishment for their involvement in betting activities. 

As part of the new Collective Bargaining Agreement, players’ uniforms are now the subject of advertising for the first time. It is still illegal for players, coaches, managers, umpires and officials to play bets in Major League Baseball. 

In his book “Baseball in the Garden of Eden“, chronicler John Thorn explains how gambling far prevented “the flowering of the game.” rather, it was “serious poison.” 

In the infancy of baseball, the sport was allowed as a boy’s game. But in the 19th century, gambling increased the interest and investment in the sport, attracting legions of aging fans. 

Gambling was aided by the spread of statistics, that particular lifeblood of baseball that keeps fans hooked. The statistic was originally developed to allow the results of a game to be revealed in the form of box scores on a printed page. 

Stats also created a repository of information that players could use to make their bets, many of which were made in the middle of games. In his history of Fenway Park, Glenn Stout describes how, in the early days of the stadium, “the grand seats were occupied by crazy players who played bets on everything from the eventual winner to ball and strike calls. 

And similar mysterious things like whether the wind would change direction.”

Fans waving dollar bills and barking out bets resembled “brokers at the bottom of the stock market.” 

This sport is distinctly different from that of 1919. The idea that the Black Sox players were forced to throw the World Series because owner Charles Comiskey was so close to them is part of the myth. 

Still, there is no doubt that today’s athletes are much more compensated than those of a century ago, and therefore less likely to be subject to fiscal temptation. (This is different from saying they are “overpaid”. “It’s not.) 

But that only applies to professional athletes. The knockouts of thousands of collegiate athletes get no compensation, and I’m not just talking about the big time college sports. 

Now you can go to a Coppin State University volleyball game, for example. Do you know how easy it would be to fix a volleyball game that no one is paying attention to? It is not legal to bet on college sports or the Little League World Series in the United States, but you can be on both at offshore casinos. 

Activists argue that college sports have always been banned in the United States. Only time will tell. However, when money is thrown around, the goalposts tend to move, as we have learned from the rush of gambling many times. The other major difference is the technology. Bets can be made in real time from your phone, mere feet away from the venue where the match is being played. And the bets you can apply are becoming more precise every day. 

One of the biggest growth areas in gambling is in-game creation, which allows new bets to be made mid-game based on changing betting lines from the start of the game. 

Many argue that the technology has become too reliable to avoid embarrassing scandals, as advanced artificial intelligence automatically breaks down potential falling irregularities. 

But that is only likely for a big scandal like the Black Sox charge when the World Series is on the line, or when massive money is being moved around but in one direction only triggering the alarm bells.

Players (or coaches, or perhaps more likely referees) who give up points or miss or give up free throws can and will be in microform across the country. It’s no surprise that legal bookmakers want to hedge their tax breaks.

Commissioner Rob Clark said- “We can join hands with the leagues in a way we haven’t done in the past and we can cover games as well in a way we haven’t done in the past. Some gambling observers found West’s comments extremely disturbing. 

I understand that gambling is an important source of profit for leagues, media and individual countries at a time when every source of income is essential. The point is that gambling has always been a crucial indirect source of profit. 

But because the memories of the Black Sox rebuke were so fresh and passed down from generation to generation (why commissioner Bart Giamatti was so tough on Pete Rose), the leagues took an incredibly conservative approach to the hot stove. 

Technology has also arrived that has made gaming easy and reveals that it can be a more significant money maker than anyone would have expected. This, along with the Supreme Court decision in 2018, opened the door. Who wants to talk about Black Sox when it’s so important to make money? 

Now the sports world is immersed in gambling on both bases. Trouble is coming. It’s all fun and games until suddenly, dramatically, it’s not.
